Bridging the Coverage Gap
Canadians often believe their medical needs are fully covered by the government. While doctor visits and hospital stays are covered, many other essential services are not.
Health and Dental insurance is designed to pay for the day-to-day medical expenses that provincial plans (like OHIP, AHCIP, or MSP) do not cover.
What Does It Cover?
Supplemental health plans typically cover a mix of the following:
1. Prescription Drugs
This is the most common reason people buy insurance. It covers a percentage (e.g., 70% to 100%) of the cost of medications prescribed by a doctor.
2. Dental Care
- Basic Services: Cleanings, fillings, extractions, and x-rays.
- Major Services: Crowns, bridges, and dentures (usually available only after you have had the plan for 1-2 years).
- Orthodontics: Braces for children (typically generally not covered on individual plans, or has low limits).
3. Paramedical Services
Visits to specialists such as:
- Massage Therapists
- Chiropractors
- Physiotherapists
- Psychologists
- Podiatrists
4. Vision Care
Covers the cost of eye exams, prescription glasses, and contact lenses.
5. Medical Equipment
Items like crutches, wheelchairs, hearing aids, and orthotics.
